Overview

Multispectral IoT Technologies and Artificial Intelligence for the Safeguarding of Rock Cultural Heritage

A predictive system for the protection of medieval frescoes
In the Puglia-Lucania region, thousands of medieval frescoes (6th-15th centuries) exist in rock-hewn churches and hypogea, representing a priceless yet seriously threatened European artistic heritage. These cultural assets, created on calcarenite substrates and often located in natural environments, are subject to multiple and irreversible degradation caused by biological, chemical, and environmental factors. Currently, there are no integrated systems capable of predictively detecting the specific causes of deterioration to enable timely and targeted conservation interventions.
S.H.I.E.L.D. is a collaborative research project developing an innovative predictive diagnostics system for the conservation of medieval cave frescoes in the Puglia-Lucania region. The system integrates multispectral imaging, environmental sensors, and artificial intelligence algorithms to non-invasively detect specific causes of degradation (seepage, microalgae, concretions, bacteria) and provide predictive analyses of the state of conservation of cultural heritage. The 24-month project involves three Apulian companies (Tecnosoft, e.RATIO, and Geoatlas) and aims to reach the TRL 7 technological readiness level through direct experimentation at local underground sites.
